Grace Cheng

President & CEO

Grace Cheng Braun joined WISE Senior Services in July 2005 as the organization’s President and CEO.  The mission of WISE is to preserve the independence and dignity of older adults, and to prevent premature institutionalism whenever possible.  For 39 years, WISE, a nonprofit, social services organization, has been recognized for its wide range of innovative support services designed to meet the needs of a diverse clientele within the greater Los Angeles area.  

      An accomplished business executive, Ms. Cheng Braun holds a masters degree in health planning and policy from UCLA and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the UC Riverside. She is an executive business coach, having completed the coaching certification training through The Hudson Institute of Santa Barbara, and is an accredited coach through the International Coach Federation. Ms. Cheng Braun is a two-time, past president of the Healthcare Public Relations & Marketing Association of Southern California; has served on the Adult Degree Program faculty at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, Calif.; currently volunteers as a corporate trainer for LEAP, Inc. (Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics), where she has conducted workshops for Corning, Xerox and Microsoft; and has been teaching graduate-level courses in the International Public Policy And Management Program at the University of Southern California for the past six years.   

    Ms. Cheng Braun’s career includes a highly successful, six-year term as Vice President for Marketing and Public Relations at Cedars-Sinai Health System in Los Angeles.  Ms. Cheng Braun has also served as Associate Director of Business and Organizational Development at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center. In this vice president-level position, she was responsible for human resources, public relations, legislative affairs, marketing, community/business outreach, strategic planning, program development and physician relations. 

    With more than 25 years of distinguished communications and marketing experience, Ms. Cheng Braun attributes her accomplishments to her ability to communicate, build teamwork and recognize the potential in others, bringing forth the best in people.  Staff surveys consistently acknowledge Ms. Cheng Braun for her leadership, vision and commitment to excellence.

 

 

Kevin Hayata 

North Texas Systems Engineering Director 

Raytheon Network Centric Systems,

McKinney, Texas 

Kevin Hayata serves as the Systems Engineering Director within Raytheon's Network Centric Systems (NCS) Texas Engineering Organization.  The NCS Texas Systems Engineering Center supports the Combat Systems and the Command and Control business areas.  The programs in these business areas explore state of the art sensor analysis, development, and integration solutions to support the warfighter of today and tomorrow.   Kevin's responsibilities for this position include the development of people and Mission System Integration (MSI) capabilities, the deployment of system engineering processes and procedures within the organization, the advancement of sensor based technology, the development of new business opportunities, and the superior performance of all the programs that he supports.   

     Prior to this assignment, Kevin served as the California Systems Engineering Center Manager where he provided engineering leadership supporting several major Raytheon NCS business areas including Navigation and Landing Systems (NLS), Networked Communication Systems (NWCS), and Highway Transportation Management Systems (HTMS).  In addition, Kevin served as Industry Representative for the California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) and California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) Math Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) programs, volunteered his time to support the CSUF Association of Computer Machinists (ACM), and served as a member of the Fullerton Union School District Science Advisory Board.  Prior to his days in management, Kevin served significant time as both software and systems engineer, where his technical emphasis centered on the development of detection, tracking, and classification algorithms for sonar and radar based applications.  

     Kevin is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics-System Science.  He also holds a Masters of Arts degree in Applied Mathematics and a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering degree from California State University,

Fullerton.  Kevin is a Qualified Raytheon 6 Sigma Specialist.

 

 

 

 

John C. Nguyen, Ph.D. 

Lighthouse Leadership Consultant

John arrived in the United States in 1975 at the age of seven. John received his Electrical Engineering Degree from Texas A&M University in College Station in 1991.  He later completed his formal "education journey" with an MBA in 1996 and Ph.D. in 2002 from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. 

     While balancing full time work for the last 14 years in the petrochemical industry, John opened his second company, Lighthouse Leadership Consultant in 2002.  The company's mission is to assist individuals in improving their abilities to recognize their potential and bring focus to their life's goals. The company was able to organize "sold out" workshops such as Navigating Corporate Politics, Conversation Confidence, High Impact Presentations and EnFusion (connecting your vision to your present reality), just to name a few. John's audience ranges from high school students to corporate executives.  His talent to communicate effectively through interactive workshops is the hallmark to the company's success.  John says that his strength and joy in life comes from the wonderful relationship with his wife and young son.

 

 

Angela E. Oh, 

Of Counsel, Bird, Marella, Boxer, Wolpert, Nessim, Drooks & Lincenberg (Los Angeles),  is a nationally-recognized attorney, public lecturer, and community leader.  Formerly a name partner and trial attorney at Beck DeCorso Barrera & Oh, she has represented individuals and entities in all facets of state and federal court litigation.  During her years in public service and private practice, Ms. Oh has built a reputation as an effective advocate and negotiator, drawing upon a wide breadth of experiences in the community, legal, and political arenas.

     In 1992, Ms. Oh gained national prominence as a spokesperson and mediator for the Asian American community in connection with the Los Angeles riots.  Thereafter, she was appointed by President Bill Clinton to serve as one of seven Advisory Board Members on the President’s Initiative on Race, which was charged with identifying and resolving problems relating to race relations in the United States.  In 2002, Ms. Oh founded her own law firm, which focused on civil rights and criminal litigation.

     Throughout her career, Ms. Oh has served in leadership positions in numerous select commissions and boards, including as Chairperson of United States Senator Barbara Boxer’s Federal Judicial Nominations Committee for the Central District of California; a Member of the Los Angeles City Commission on Human Relations; a Lawyer Delegate to the 9th Circuit Judicial Conference; and Commissioner on the ABA Commission on Women in the Legal Profession.  Previously, Ms. Oh was also a founding member of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, and a recipient of its Trailblazer Award.

     Ms. Oh’s public lectures and writings reflect the opportunities and challenges that diversity presents.  Her lectures have taken her into both national and international arenas, including China, Korea, the Middle East, Northern Ireland, and the United Kingdom.  Her teaching appointments have been at UCLA School of Law, UCLA Asian American Studies Department, and UC Irvine School of Social Sciences and Political Science.  Ms. Oh is also an ordained Priest, Zen Buddhist Priest - Rinzai Sect.

Sanjeev Venkatesan

Director of North Texas 

Software Engineering, NCS

As director of software, Sanjeev is a member of the NCS North Texas Engineering Leadership Team. Mr. Venkatesan is responsible for people, process, and technology of all software programs and technologies within North Texas NCS Engineering and providing guidance and oversight in their execution. Mr. Venkatesan was Sr. Principal Software Engineer for NCS. His management, technical and research expertise lies in the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Electronics and Embedded Systems.  

     His educational background includes knowledge representation, engineering mathematics, radar and navigation, antenna and wave propagation, and electronic digital circuits.  After supporting development activities for the Ballistics Missile Defense program, Mr. Venkatesan supported software subcontract manager on the future Combat Systems, Ground Sensor Integrator (GSI) program.  

     He is a graduate of Raytheon Principal of Program Leadership program and an instructor of the course.  He is also Raytheon Six Sigma Specialist and an student of 2006 Engineering Leadership Development Program. At Denver C3I organization, as the software manager for the Ground Systems, he was responsible for 250 software engineers, multiple internal and external development and support programs and national and international customers.  At TI/Raytheon, Mr. Venkatesan was the software manager for risk reduction program for Follow On to TOW.  He also co-authored the proposal for the same.  Mr. Venkatesan was the software manager for the HTI Engineering, Manufacturing and Design (EMD) program.  He was successful in transitioning this program from EMD to Low Rate Intital Production (LRIP).  

 

 

Pamela Yip 

Personal Finance Writer and Columnist

Dallas Morning News 

 At the Morning News, Ms. Yip writes the Monday personal finance centerpiece story and the Money Talk column that appear each Monday in the newspaper. She joined the Morning News in 1999 from the Houston Chronicle, where she was the personal finance writer and columnist for nine years.  She helps develop training programs and seminars for The Morning News' business news staff, and was a team leader in 2006 for the newspaper's newsroom-wide reporting and writing training program for reporters and editors. 

     Ms. Yip started her journalism career in 1979 with United Press International in Los Angeles, covering general news. Before that, she was a reporter intern covering politics at United Press' bureau in Sacramento, Calif.   She was a business reporter at the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner, USA Today and the Stockton, Calif., Record. While at the Houston Chronicle, she covered the historic handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997 by Great Britain.

     Ms. Yip has won several reporting awards, including one for best business reporting from the Los Angeles Press Club, as well as business reporting awards from the Houston Press Club and the Hearst Corp., the parent company of the Houston Chronicle. She also won an award for public affairs reporting from the Associated Press Managing Editors Council in California.  She has served as a judge for the Gerald Loeb Awards at the University of California at Los Angeles. The awards are considered the most prestigious in business and financial journalism.  She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

     Ms. Yip has a bachelor's degree from California State University in Sacramento, where she majored in journalism, with a concentration in economics. She attended the Wharton School of Business' program for financial reporters at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.  Yip is a 1997 graduate of the University of Houston's Personal Financial Planning Certificate program.
