Session A  - Understanding Your Cultural Values

Content: Asian Pacific American Cultural Values - Stereotypes, the impact on self-esteem and self-identity, and their relationship to cultural values - Perceptions / Comparisons of APA and Anglo American values - Mainstream leadership skills and management styles

* J.D. Hokoyama - Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics

 

Session B - Managing the Asian Pacific American Career 

Content: Self assessment of values, interest, personality characteristics - Gap between mainstream and APA perceptions regarding job performance - Career exploration to determine job / career fit - Creation of career strategy and action plan

* Glen Kawafuchi - Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics

 

Session C  - Community Organizing: Holding Elective Officials Accountable -

Seminar will cover: Community leadership development, Broad-based organizing, Relational power.

* Sister Pearl Ceasar - Dallas Area Interfaith

* Volunteer Leaders from Dallas Area Interfaith will be co-presenters at this workshop.

 

Session D - Building Coalitions

To collaborate means "to work together." What are ways that Asian American organizations can work with others on common social and political goals?  Many times Asian American community find that it is many times necessary to collaborate to get the desired results.

Session E - The ABC's of Grant Writing

Getting more resources for your organization requires that you learn who to ask and how to ask.  This practical class will have you researching and writing grants with confidence. Participants learn the basic components of a good request and common mistakes to avoid.

Session F  - Planning Profitable Fundraising Events

Designed for anyone involved in special events, especially those who have worked too hard for too small a return.  This is a "how to" session for both the novice and the veteran event planner.

Is your idea of networking cold calling or passing out business cards at a party?  Think again.  Challenge your traditional views of networking and learn the art of building a community through personal relationships.  This workshop will teach and accessible and enjoyable form of personal strategic planning and the fundamentals of networking as a means for both professional and personal fulfillment.

Content:  Personal Assessment of risk taking - Influence of cultural, historical and other factors on APA risk taking - Risk taking models and situational analysis in practicing these methods - Strategies for risk taking and ideas about leadership

Session I - Effective Political Involvement - 

Why should Asian Americans get involved with politics from both a community and personal level?  And, how to get involved.  These political experts will discuss ways to be effective.
